Rector Gavino Mariotti has been a Full Professor of Economic and Political Geography at the University of Sassari since 2010. His research interests initially focused on environmental issues related to extractive activities, which were later expanded and integrated with economic and local development aspects. He conducted targeted investigations on the territory concerning tourism, with a perspective on the recovery and enhancement of the inland areas of Sardinia, as well as cartographic aspects related to tourism. In recent times, his research activity has centered on the analysis of territorial competitiveness.Since 2015, he has been in charge of the laboratory "Environment and Territory – Data Analysis" at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (University of Sassari), where scientific research and advanced training activities related to geographical, environmental, territorial, social, cartographic, and historical-geographical topics take place. Since 2020, he has been a member of the scientific committee of the Route series – Geography of transport and tourism (TAB Edizioni).He has been a part of the Board of Directors and the Academic Senate of the University of Sassari on multiple occasions. From '96 to 2002, he held the position of Board Member of E.R.S.U., the Regional Agency for the Right to University Study of Sassari, elected by the Regional Council of Sardinia.From 2012 to 2016, he served as the Director of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences.
