Apply for European certification (Doctor europeus)

The European Doctorate is not an academic title with supranational value, but a certification awarded under the responsibility of individual university institutions. It was drawn up by the Confederation of European Union Rectors' Conferences (EUA) in 1992 and is awarded if the following four conditions are met:

  1. positive assessment of the thesis by at least two highly qualified professors from two universities in the European Union other than the university in the country in which the doctoral student is enrolled and the universities where the doctoral student did his/her internship;
  2. the presence in the examination committee of at least one member from an institution of a European Union country other than that of the country in which the doctoral student is enrolled;
  3. part of the discussion of the thesis must be in one of the official languages of the European Union, different from that of the country in which the doctoral candidate is enrolled;
  4. the doctoral thesis must be the result of periods, even if not continuous, of work and research of a total duration of at least three months in a European Union country other than the one in which the doctoral student is registered.

In order to apply for the issue of the European Doctorate Certificate, PhD students enrolled in the third year, using the form below, must make an explicit request by 30 September, in order to allow the PhD course in which they are enrolled to decide, by 31 October of each year, on the fulfilment of the four conditions mentioned above and express their consent to the recognition of the Certificate.

The application form for the granting of the Certification must be sent to the Ufficio Protocollo – ufficioprotocollo@uniss.it.
