PRIN 2022 PNRR Call for Proposals

The PRIN program funds public research projects in order to promote the national research system, strengthen interactions between universities and research institutions in line with the objectives outlined in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP) and encourage Italian participation in initiatives related to the European Union's Framework Program for Research and Innovation.

These are projects whose complexity and nature may require the collaboration of multiple professors/researchers. Depending on the nature of the project, the research team must consist of at least two research units belonging to different universities, organizations or institutions. Each two-year project must provide a maximum funding of 300,000.00 euros. Project costs are covered by MUR funding. The MUR will recognize, upon approval of the rankings, a contribution equal to 100 percent of the costs deemed congruous. When the funding is disbursed, the contribution actually due will be declared eligible by the MUR, based on the administrative-accounting controls provided for in Article 8 of the Notice.

Expenditures related to cost titles whose amount is less than 500.00 euros, net of VAT, are not eligible.

Projects must promote curiosity-driven research activities and have a focus on one of the emerging strategic themes related to the objectives of a cluster of the European Framework Program for Research and Innovation 2021-2027, as listed below.

     Strategic theme         Reference Cluster
Sustainability and protection of natural resourcescluster 5; cluster 6
Circular Economycluster 1; cluster 4; cluster 5
Biodiversity and ecosystem servicescluster 1; cluster 6
Quality of the environmentcluster 2; cluster 3; cluster 5
Human well-beingcluster 1; cluster 2; cluster 3; cluster 6

A detailed correlation diagram between the emerging strategic themes and objectives included under the 6 clusters of the European Framework Program for Research and Innovation 2021-2027 that are to be pursued by each project according to the strategic theme chosen by the Principal Investigator is given in Annex 1.

Projects must pertain to the three macrosectors determined by the ERC:

  • Life Sciences (LS)
  • Physical, Chemical and Engineering Sciences (PE)
  • Social Sciences and Humanities (SH)

The budget available for the Call is €420,000,000.00 and pertains to investment 1.1, Mission 4 "Education and Research" - Component 2 "From Research to Enterprise" of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP).

The program is divided into two distinct lines of intervention:

  1. Line of intervention A - "Main" (total endowment € 168,000,000.00): open to all PIs who have not applied to participate in line of intervention B. 30% of the total endowment is reserved for projects submitted by IPs under 40 years of age on the date of publication of the Notice, or by IPs that can benefit from the causes of extension of the age of under 40 years provided for in Article 4, paragraph 3, of the Notice;
  2. Line of intervention B - "South" (total endowment € 252,000,000.00): reserved for projects in which all units (including that of the IP) are actually operating in the regions of the Mezzogiorno(Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise, Puglia, Sardinia and Sicily). Thirty percent of the total endowment is reserved for projects submitted by IPs under 40 years of age on the date of publication of the Call, or by IPs who can benefit from the causes of extension of age under 40 provided for in Article 4, paragraph 3, of the Call.

Applications must be submitted by PIs no later than 3:00 p.m. on November 30, 2022, failing which they will not be able to access the procedure and the consequent exclusion of the project from the Call, only through web-based procedures. Applications are written in English. The fillable forms are made available as of 15:00 on October 18, 2022.
