President Mattarella at the University to celebrate Berlinguer

Sergio Mattarella

On May 25, 1922, Enrico Berlinguer was born in Sassari. Exactly one hundred years later, on May 25, 2022, the University of Sassari will officially celebrate the centenary of the birth of the political figure with a significant event featuring the presence of the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and the Minister of University and Research, Maria Cristina Messa.

The ceremony commenced at the University's palace in Piazza Università at 11:00, with the arrival of the President of the Republic and dignitaries. They were welcomed by the rendition of the "Inno di Mameli" by the tenor Francesco Demuro, preceding the unveiling of a commemorative plaque honoring Enrico Berlinguer. The plaque is placed on the first floor of the historic palace, on the upper floor of the loggia, next to the one commemorating President Francesco Cossiga.

This part of the ceremony serves as a prelude to the creation of a Gallery of Illustrious Sardinians, spanning all university structures. It dedicates plaques, as in this case, and also rooms and classrooms in all departments to personalities of the University of Sassari who have distinguished themselves and brought prestige to the University, the city of Sassari, and the entire Sardinia. This project has already surpassed its initial ideation phase, and in the short term, the naming of the various identified structures will gradually proceed.

The ceremony continued in the auditorium with welcoming remarks from the Magnificent Rector, Gavino Mariotti, followed by the President of the Region, Christian Solinas. The Minister of University and Research, Maria Cristina Messa, concluded the greetings phase with her remarks.

The political figure of the statesman was remembered by Omar Chessa, Professor of Constitutional Law at the Department of Law of the University of Sassari, with a lecture titled "The Moral and Political Legacy of Enrico Berlinguer."

During the ceremony, the family of Enrico Berlinguer was presented with a certificate of high merit proposed by the Department of Law and strongly endorsed by the University of Sassari.

The University of Sassari Choir, conducted by Maestro Laura Lambroni, performed a traditional song from the Sardinian folk music tradition.

The graphic design and bas-relief of Enrico Berlinguer were created by Francesco Farina.
