Cortile Ateneo

In the 1935 the painter Filippo Figari had been designated to direct the Art school that was born in Sassari, the first state school of this type created on the island, but designed as an academy.

it is therefore to the Sassarese school that the university turns to the late thirties, for the arrangement of the entrance hall. Figari, tested director of decorative companies, takes the reins of the works; The architecture teacher support him Ermanno Paccagnini , the furniture designer Enrico Clemente , also in the institute staff, ed Eugenio Tavolara . Together they direct the construction site during the prolonged absence of the director, called to Rome by the duties of his office.

the general project of the atrium is of Figari, marked by criteria of great sobriety: a travertine coating it covers the walls and cruciform pillars, ending in the birth of the vaults of white; Ancient plaque of the university are placed within pane, as well as, in the central wall, a plaque commemorating the university seal.

The black band floor on a white background is combined with the black marble bands that close the walls at the top and below; The lighting is entrusted to shore from long auctions it was posted to the walls.

The result is a successful compromise between ancient and modern, between the classic lines of architecture and an dryness of flavor vaguely rationalist .
