The Anatomical Collection "Luigi Rolando" Department of Biomedical Sciences Among the collection's highlights are wax models of brains created by Luigi Rolando during his tenure at the University of Sassari (1804 – 1814).The initial nucleus of the Sassari Anatomical Museum dates back to 1912 when Professor Giuseppe Levi, a Anatomy lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine, reorganized the existing specimens, including the wax models of brains crafted by Luigi Rolando during his time in Sassari (1804 – 1814).Thanks to Professor Giovanni Tedde (Director of the Institute from 1977 to 1994), the Luigi Rolando Anatomical Museum was officially established in the late 1980s. The museum was situated within the building, located at the corner of Angioi and Mancini streets, which housed the wooden Anatomical Theater built in the early 20th century, unfortunately destroyed in 1992 to make way for the Faculties of Law and Political Science. The collection now includes approximately 160 anatomical preparations divided into various sections such as Osteology, Myology, Nervous System, Splanchnology, Topographic Anatomy, and Angiology. There is also an Embryology section, housing several dozen human fetuses in various stages of development and examples of malformations, along with specimens of anatomical instruments used from the late 18th to the first half of the 20th century.Notable items in the collection include the syringe used for preserving the body of Giuseppe Garibaldi and the petrified hand of a young girl by the anatomist Efisio Marini from Cagliari, donated to the Municipality of Sassari in 1876.
