University and Penitentiary Education

Starting from the academic year 2021-22, there are 25 computer workstations set up in dedicated university classrooms specifically for PUP Uniss students, established in the four Penitentiary Institutes of Alghero, Nuoro, Sassari, and Tempio Pausania with funding from Uniss (MIUR), DAP, and PRAP Sardegna.

From these workstations, each student, equipped with personalized access credentials, can benefit from the following three functionalities: 1) access to study materials; 2) management of their university career; 3) outgoing messaging to the PUP secretariat to request meetings, schedule exams, and express support needs.

Administrative Support for Enrollments

The University of Sassari, in addition to remote support with a back-office service, has been offering a support service for enrollments to inmates at the penitentiary institutes of Alghero, Nuoro, and Tempio since the academic year 2018-19, in collaboration with the Legal-Pedagogical Officers of each penitentiary institute. This involves deploying several units of teaching and administrative staff to the penitentiary institutes for a working day to streamline and speed up the procedures for initial enrollment and subsequent year registrations.

Incoming New Student Reception

The Penitentiary Hub of the University of Sassari provides an incoming reception service for each newly enrolled student, aimed at meeting the Referring Professor of the chosen course of study and presenting the study program.

Currently, the service is active at the following penitentiary institutions: CR Alghero (courses L-12, L-14, L-19, L-25 STA, L-26, LMG-01); CC Nuoro (courses L-1, L-19, L-25 SFA); CC Sassari (courses L-12, L-25 SAZ); CR Tempio (courses L-10, L-19, LM-62).
  • Junior Tutor: Students of bachelor's or master's degree courses who carry out part of their training internship in penitentiary institutions. It can be activated through the signing of an agreement between the prison directorates and the university departmental directorates.

Third Mission

Public engagment
The University of Sassari, starting from the academic year 2017-18, proposes and coordinates seminar series in the four penitentiary institutes included in the Uniss-PRAP Protocol of March 26, 2014, aimed at a broader audience than students regularly enrolled in our courses.

Our public university is committed to influencing the education of all detainees in northern Sardinia, as it believes that if every detainee, during their time in prison, were to acquire some specific skills, even small ones, they would have some additional cards to play when reintegrating into society upon release.

The annual seminar series respond to specific needs of the prison population and will be mainly conducted by university professors and researchers, but also by former graduates, professionals, retired teachers, and potentially students accompanied by professors.
