In a nutshell

Outline, texts and goals

Professional status.
Expert in the humanities and creator and producer in various sectors of culture and communication
The master's degree in Modern Philology is characterised by its focus on providing an excellent education that is
preparatory to scientific research in various fields of studia humanitatis, from linguistics to philology, the arts, geo-history and entertainment, in national and foreign research centres, and in the academic context itself (appointment as subject experts, project assignments, etc.).
In this sense, the degree obtained is a privileged requirement for participation in PhD programmes in fields related to modern and contemporary humanities. Master's degree holders can also apply the knowledge they have acquired in linguistics to the critical revision of written texts for publication, audiovisual and multimedia. In addition to their focus on the world of publishing, in the noble traditional sense, they also possess interpersonal skills that can be applied in the socio-cultural market: as a specialist in different types of texts, graduates with a Master's degree may be tasked with promoting the image of a company, organisation, or theatre or film production company by writing texts, selecting and disseminating favourable publicity material, organising and sponsoring events of particular importance and visibility, charitable activities for the benefit of the population, and similar activities not directly related to advertising promotion.
Trained to exercise creativity critically, graduates of LM-14 possess the skills to compete in the cultural industry market, in the fields of literary writing, professional writing, and art criticism and history. Graduates of LM14 will be able to interact fruitfully with public administration sectors operating in the field of cultural heritage enhancement and, in the private sector, will be able to apply their cross-disciplinary skills by offering their services as teachers and experts in educational and curriculum design.
Finally, the degree obtained, corroborated by the credits acquired in the scientific disciplinary sectors required by law, and by adequate credits for appropriate groups of subjects in psycho-socio-pedagogical subjects, as required by current legislation, constitutes a key to accessing competitive examinations that qualify graduates to teach literary and linguistic subjects in lower and upper secondary schools (classes A-11 - Literary subjects and Latin; A-12 - Literary subjects in upper secondary schools;
A-21 - Geography; A-22 - Italian, history, geography in lower secondary schools; A-23 - Italian language for foreign language learners
[Alloglotti]).

Specific learning outcomes

The LM14 Master's degree programme is rooted in the humanities. The humanism that underpins its curriculum focuses on the contemporary world, but is also aware of the continuity and persistence of past traditions, including classical and Christian traditions, which are at the roots of European identity. The name of the course was chosen with reference to that established by the ministerial declaration, amplified and clarified to highlight its continuity with the immediately congruent three-year degree (that in L10), and to make explicit its dynamic and communicative vocation, in the local/global dialectic that affects the production and consumption of cultural goods. The course's wide-ranging programme focuses on research in all areas related to literary studies (with a view to master's degrees, specialisation schools and PhDs) on the one hand, and on the other hand provides institutional access to the relevant teaching competitions. In addition to preparing students for advanced scientific training and teaching, the master's degree course also opens up a channel for in-depth training linked to mass media, publishing, theatre and communication, with practical application of the disciplinary skills acquired through laboratory exercises and internship agreements, and offers the opportunity to perfect linguistic competence in the main languages of the European Union, in accordance with the CEFR. The degree course therefore prepares master's graduates who are able to meet the demands of the local area and the regional labour market, but also to propose and enhance the skills acquired in a supra-regional context, and trains cultural operators who are able to relate, with full awareness of their social significance and importance and their impact on the business context and the local area, to the procedures for implementing events, exhibitions and initiatives in the field of cultural promotion, the arts, publishing and public relations, in collaboration with local authorities, foundations, philological centres and cultural institutes, not only regional but also national and foreign, and, more generally, with regard to the various aspects of publishing, both traditional and electronic.
Specifically, depending on the path chosen, master's degree graduates will be able to acquire in-depth training, enabling them to develop independent critical skills in the fields of modern philology (L-FIL-LET/10 Italian Literature, L-FIL-LET/13 Philology of Italian Literature and L-FIL-LET/09 Romance Philology) and ancient, medieval and humanistic philology (L-FIL-LET/04 Latin Philology and L-FIL-LET/08 Medieval and Humanistic Latin Literature); they will acquire the theoretical and methodological tools, structured according to different approaches, necessary for the acquisition of versatile and critical communication skills related to the arts (L-FIL-LET/11 Contemporary Literature and Experimentation, L-ART/03 History of Contemporary Art, L-ART/06 History and Criticism of Cinema, L-ART/07 History of Music); they will be able to make full use of the main tools of critical analysis in the sphere of the production and consumption of cultural goods also linked to the territory (M-DEA/01 Media Anthropology, M-PED/02 Children's Literature and Writing, L-FIL-LET/14 Literary Criticism and Publishing; M-GGR/01 Geography); they will be able to apply, with full awareness of their meaning, linguistic and glottological tools to the teaching of Italian in the context of the training and integration of alloglot learners (L-FIL-LET/12 Italian Linguistics, L-LIN/01 General Linguistics, L-LIN/02 Teaching of Modern Languages). With regard to a specialisation aimed at humanistic knowledge related to the territory, some disciplines are also offered in their more specific variants (L-FIL-LET/12 History of the Italian Language in Sardinia, L-LIN/01 Linguistics and Dialectology of Sardinia, L-ANT/03 History of Roman Sardinia, L-FIL-LET/09 Philology of Medieval Sardinian Texts, L-FIL-LET/13 Literature and Philology of Sardinia, L-ART/03 History of Art in Sardinia, L-ART/07 History of Music in Sardinia, M-GGR/01 Geography of Sardinia).
The LM-14 course will also use specific workshops for the practical training of students, including the Creative Writing Workshop, the Curatorial Practices Workshop, the Musicology Workshop, the Cartography Workshop, the Authorial Philology Workshop, and the Latin Translation Workshop. The Sardinian, Algherese, Sassarese and Gallurese language workshops are aimed at students of the Sardinian Languages and Cultures curriculum. The master's course will use lectures and practical exercises, carried out using advanced telematic and electronic tools, with teaching activities that will also have a seminar-style format.
