Specific learning outcomes The master’s degree programme aims to train professional skills useful in the main fields of intervention of biotechnology applications in the biomedical field. Knowledge of human and animal physiology is provided and how to perform a diagnosis, therapeutic and prophylactic intervention through the biotechnological approach. The student develops the necessary competencies in the fields of gene therapy, human and animal reproduction and food processing. All this is guaranteed by a solid practical and laboratory experience. In particular, graduates must know: - genetic and biochemical aspects of human and animal cells and tissues - structure and function of biological macro-molecules, with particular reference to genomic and proteomic approaches - congenital or acquired diseases of medical and veterinary interest - methodologies for the identification, selection and differentiation of stem cells for their application in organ and tissue repair techniques - principles of biocompatibility, integration, biological degradation and the possibilities of application of biomaterials in medical and surgical specialties - cellular, molecular and gene transfer biotechnology methodologies to identify and validate therapeutic targets - biotechnological methods for both experimental and clinical reproduction - use of biotechnologies in the production and processing of foodstuffs of animal origin for human and animal consumption. The Master’s degree program aims to train biotechnologists capable of: - coordinate laboratory activities for research or diagnostic investigations; - use post-genomic approaches for the engineering and manipulation of bacteria, viruses or eukaryotic cells; - propose systems and algorithms for diagnostics and personalized therapy; - assist the doctor or veterinarian in therapeutic diagnostic activities involving biotechnological applications; - prepare experimental designs and carry out research in the field of Biotechnology applied to human and veterinary medicine Curriculum description The Master in Human and Animal Biotechnologies Health provides 120 university credits (CFU) and it has a duration of two years. It includes integrated courses and ends with a final exam. The educational path of each student is oriented by a tutoring commission, which operates within the course of study. For each year the training activities are organized in two cycles, conventionally called "semesters", lasting six months. There will also be an internship in qualified research laboratories. The time commitment reserved for each CFU is governed by the teaching rules of the course of study. For the evaluation of the achievement of the expected learning objectives, one or more ongoing tests may be provided; tests may be written, oral or practical. The student can acquire 8 optional CFU choosing any teaching module offered by the University of Sassari.
