Marine Litter Strategies in Asinara, Final Conference

On Thursday, October 12th, at the administrative headquarters of the Asinara National Park in Porto Torres, the final conference of the project promoted by the University of Sassari and funded by the PO FEAMP 2014-2020 program, "Creation of a strategy for monitoring marine litter in the Marine Protected Area of Asinara Island involving fishermen," will take place.

In recent months, researchers and fishermen in the Marine Protected Area of Asinara have joined forces to create a strategy for the constant control of marine litter, a cause of countless damages to marine life and a source of negative impacts on fishing and the local economy.

The conference will be an opportunity to present and discuss these results, including the testing of a technological application for reporting marine litter: the SeaWaste Research app is indeed one of the outcomes of collaboration with fishermen. Among the main outputs of the project, coordinated by Donatella Carboni, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Sassari, the crucial importance of environmental education and "citizen science" has emerged as possible governance tools for the protection of coastal ecosystems, waste management, and the inclusion and enhancement of the role of fishermen in the marine litter mitigation system, in line with the Salvamare law. The activities were coordinated by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture of this University, the University of Ferrara, the University of Bucharest, the Asinara National Park, the FLAG Nord Sardegna, the harbors, and the Municipalities of Porto Torres and Stintino, Co.Pe.Ga Cooperative A.R.L. of Porto Torres, Cooperativa Pescatori di Stintino - Soc. Coop.a R.L. of Stintino, and the company Innovyou Digital Tech Agency.

In addition to representatives of Uniss and other project partners and stakeholders, during the conference on October 12th, starting at 9:30 am and closing at 5:30 pm, national and international experts on the subject engaged in multidisciplinary projects will intervene, with the presence of the University of Maryland, CURSA, and ISPRA.
