Access to further study. This degree grants access to all the degree courses of the 2° cycle, including the first level university masters.
Professional status. Upon passing the State Examination, enrollment in the Register of National Biologists for the profession of biologist is foreseen - section B - with the professional title of Junior Biologist, a recognized professional figure for the performance of regulated activities. The main employment opportunities concern technical-operational activities as well as autonomous and supportive professional activities, within the limits indicated by the law establishing the organization of the profession of biologist (Presidential Decree 328/2001). In particular, the student will have direct access to the employment world to carry out professional and technical activities in laboratories and analysis, control and management services in different operational realities (research laboratories in the University, public and private analysis laboratories, control and management structures environment and territory, in industry and in public bodies). However, these occupational areas do not exhaust the picture of the potential labor market.
Title conferred. Biological Sciences
Employment and professional opportunities for graduates. The course will prepare students either for non-academic (“professional”) or academic careers. The main career opportunities relate to technical and operational activities. In particular: professional and technical activities in laboratories and analytical services such as research laboratories at the University as well as public and private analysis laboratories; promotion and scientific-technological development with particular reference to the protection of animals and plants, the biodiversity and the environment.
Knowledge and understanding. The goals of the Biological Sciences programme are to provide expertise in order to (1) understand currently accepted concepts in modern biology and the experimental support for these concepts and (2) identify the gaps in our current understanding and the opportunities for new research in this field. Course Unit descriptions are available in the Guide at www.uniss.it/scienzebiologiche.
Applying knowledge and understanding. Through the combination of various disciplines and a strong internship experience, students majoring in Biological Sciences gain a solid foundation in the theory and application of biological and other scientific concepts and principles including the methodologies and the ability to perform biological analysis in a vast range of sectors (Biology, Hygiene, Environment, Food etc.) Undergraduate students begin working in a research laboratory early in their training under supervision of biologists who are experienced teachers and world-class researchers, with interests ranging from molecular and cell biology to ecology. The level of learning, maturity and critical ability in facing biology-related problems and connect arguments are assessed through oral and/or written exams.
Language(s) of instruction/examination. ITALIAN
Skills associated with the function The acquired skills allow you to perform independently: a) instrumental analysis related to biological investigations; b) technical and analytical procedures in biotechnology, biomolecular andbiomedical fields also geared towards research activities; c) environmental analysis and control; d) technical and analytical procedures in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Toxicology, Pharmacology and Genetics; e) quality control procedures
Function in a work context Graduates can carry out technical and executive tasks in both public and private sectors (agro-food, environmental, pharmaceutical sectors etc.). Specific careers in this field include: research technicians; clinical laboratory technologists.
Specific learning outcomes “4.2 Expected Learning Outcomes The Bachelor Program in Biological Sciences aims at building the basic theoretical and practical knowledge in fundamental areas of Biology, which are also functional for the continuation of higher education at the Master level. The learning path favours the subsequent enrollment in the Master Programs “LM-6 Biologia” and “LM-9 Biotecnologie mediche, veterinarie e farmaceutiche”, presently available at Università di Sassari. Students will have to acquire the abilities to apply the scientific method in biological investigations, and to autonomously analyze experimental data with statistical methodologies. Further learning objectives are the development of: - communications skills for the exchange of informations in the diverse fileds of biology; - english language skills. Following the principles of European harmonisation, the expertises acquired by the laureates in the “Scienze Biologiche” Program must meet the specific requirements as per the Matrice Tuning arranged at italian national level by the CBUI (Collegio dei Biologi delle Università Italiane). The training course is described in detail in the Manifesto degli Studi document (available online at www.uniss.it/scienzebiologiche ), and includes learning activities in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, basic and applied Biology, The learning activities are aimed at the acquisition of theoretical and operative fundamentals related to biology of microorganisms, plants, animals (including humans) at morphological, functional, cellular, molecular, and evolutionary levels. The Program also establishes credits for optional courses, english langauge courses, laboratory internship, and extra-curricular courses aimed at facilitating the connections with the job market.”
