Employment and professional opportunities for graduates
The course will prepare students either for non-academic (“professional”) or academic careers. The main career opportunities relate to technical and operational activities. In particular: professional and technical activities in laboratories and analytical services such as research laboratories at the University as well as public and private analysis laboratories; promotion and scientific-technological development with particular reference to the protection of animals and plants, the biodiversity and the environment.
Knowledge and understanding
The goals of the Biological Sciences programme are to provide expertise in order to (1) understand currently accepted concepts in modern biology and the experimental support for these concepts and (2) identify the gaps in our current understanding and the opportunities for new research in this field.
Course Unit descriptions are available in the Guide at
www.uniss.it/scienzebiologiche.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Through the combination of various disciplines and a strong internship experience, students majoring in Biological Sciences gain a solid foundation in the theory and application of biological and other scientific concepts and principles including the methodologies and the ability to perform biological analysis in a vast range of sectors (Biology, Hygiene, Environment, Food etc.)
Undergraduate students begin working in a research laboratory early in their training under supervision of biologists who are experienced teachers and world-class researchers, with interests ranging from molecular and cell biology to ecology. The level of learning, maturity and critical ability in facing biology-related problems and connect arguments are assessed through oral and/or written exams.
Language(s) of instruction/examination
ITALIAN
Skills associated with the function
The acquired skills allow you to perform independently: a) instrumental analysis related to biological investigations; b) technical and analytical procedures in biotechnology, biomolecular andbiomedical fields also geared towards research activities; c) environmental analysis and control; d) technical and analytical procedures in the field of Physics, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Toxicology, Pharmacology and Genetics; e) quality control procedures
Function in a work context
Graduates can carry out technical and executive tasks in both public and private sectors (agro-food, environmental, pharmaceutical sectors etc.). Specific careers in this field include: research technicians; clinical laboratory technologists.
