The Regional Council of Sardinia has approved the policy act for the creation of the Sardinian Biobank: a project of strategic importance that strengthens the role of the University of Sassari as a protagonist of scientific research and innovation in the field of preventive and personalized medicine.

The Biobank represents one of the main assets of Spoke 1 of the e.INS program - Ecosystem of Innovation for Next Generation Sardinia, coordinated by the University of Sassari as part of the SardGen project, and is financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) through Measure 4 - Component 2 - Investment 1.5. The project also enhances the resources of the Smart Specialization Strategy (S3) 2021-2027, supported by the ERDF and ESF+ funds of the European Union.

The future Biobank will be located within the Science and Technology Park of Sardinia in Pula, in synergy with the Sardinia Research Agency, as part of a broader plan to relaunch the Park. The goal is to create a highly specialized infrastructure for the collection, conservation and analysis of biological samples, essential for the progress of genomics and personalized medicine.

“With this infrastructure,” comments the Rector of the University of Sassari, Gavino Mariotti, “we are strengthening the role of the University within the regional innovation system, placing scientific research at the service of public health. Spoke 1, which we coordinate, is the beating heart of an ecosystem that aims to generate value for the entire Sardinian territory.”

The project also includes the creation of genetic profiling laboratories, bioinformatics platforms and advanced research centers, which will help position Sardinia among the most advanced European regions in the field of genomics applied to healthcare.

"With the approval of the resolution, a strategic choice is made that integrates research, health and development. The Sardinian Biobank is an investment in the knowledge and future of Sardinia that will be able to attract talent, businesses and innovative resources.

The University of Sassari, thanks to its planning and visionary capacity, confirms itself as one of the key players in the construction of a future in which scientific research and public health proceed together, at the service of Sardinian citizens and the international scientific community.
