The University of Sassari strengthens its presence on the international scene thanks to the EUNICoast project (www.eunicoast.eu). Funded by the European Commission with over 14 million euros, the initiative - called The European Alliance of Islands, ports and coastal territories, was chosen from 56 applications and has the aim of strengthening strategic university partnerships in Europe. EUNICoast is an alliance shaped by the seas, which brings together 13 universities located in an area ranging from the Baltic to the Black Sea, passing through the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, up to the Caribbean and the borders of the Arctic Ocean, for a total of 100,000 students and approximately 10,000 teaching and administrative staff. Through a proactive approach, the EUNICoast Alliance has the ambition to achieve the following objectives: contribute to building solid foundations for the next generation of aware European students and citizens; promote a multicultural, multilingual and inclusive European environment for education, research and innovation; improve the capacity of partner universities to better respond to the social and environmental challenges faced by island and coastal communities, addressing the big problems of today. To name a few: climate change, biodiversity and ecological sustainability, depopulation and talent retention, development of infrastructure and the health system, migration and social challenges, needs for economic diversification. The objective is to develop innovative educational paths, in close connection with research and territories. With funding from the EUNICoast alliance, UNISS will coordinate activities related to public engagement and internationalization and becomes part of one of the 64 alliances between universities and higher academies in Europe funded in the context of the Erasmus+ programme, involving more than 560 institutions academic, in all regions of Europe.
