SASSARI. This morning the Magnificent Rector of the University of Sassari, Gavino Mariotti, officially inaugurated the brand new Medical Simulation Center located in the Bionaturalistic Center in via Piandanna. “The Simulation Center represents not only a significant investment in the University of Sassari's modern and cutting-edge infrastructure, but above all the University's constant commitment to improving the quality of training and preparation of our students, who are and will be future health professionals,” declared the Rector.  “Students will be able to gain direct experience and perfect their skills by resolving complex clinical situations through virtual simulations and interactive scenarios. The experience gained will allow them to better manage emergencies, make quick decisions and work as a team.”

Thanks to the highly sophisticated diagnostic systems and the latest generation manikins in the laboratory, which are extremely realistic, residents and students of Medicine and health professions will be able to practice as if they had the patient in front of them. These devices, in fact, faithfully reproduce the reaction to the most diverse pathologies of different types of patients in all stages of life: newborns, children, adults, elderly people, pregnant women with all the situations and problems that can arise in the obstetric and gynecological field, including neonatal emergencies. The advanced simulators allow you to practice in the management of emergencies, anesthesia and intensive care with maneuvers that must respond to clinical deterioration through pharmacological interventions and advanced rescue procedures such as assisted ventilation in case of respiratory failure; Training in surgery with the laparoscopic simulator on minimally invasive cardiological, neurological and vascular procedures is also possible, interacting with real instruments and techniques in a simulated environment.

The center also has cutting-edge technologies for ultrasound and medical imaging, allowing internal organs, such as the heart and lungs, to be visualized and analyzed with detailed images and realistic scenarios. There is an advanced system that allows you to explore human anatomy through high resolution 3D models, useful for training in forensic medicine, orthopedics and surgery.

The 450 square meter laboratory, ready for use, is located on the first floor of the building in via Piandanna 2nd lot, currently being delivered to the university; the space is divided into different environments, equipped with large 85-inch viewers that facilitate learning in an immersive simulation context capable of helping to improve decision-making skills and teamwork. Once fully operational, it will be able to host exercises for 50 students in the various stations.

The selection of the simulators was implemented with a supply contract of the amount of 1,560,000.00 Euros, drawing on funding from the Sardinia Region RAS L.R. 17/2021 and with UNISS co-financing. The execution of the supply started in July 2024 and the set-up ended in January 2025.

The inauguration was attended by, together with the Rector Gavino Mariotti, Angela Spanu Director of the Department of Medicine, Surgery and Pharmacy, Corrado Rubino, President of the Connection Structure of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Luigi Angelo Vaira, Coordinator of the Medical Simulation Centre, Simone Loddo, Director of the Procurement and Construction Area, Novella Callero, General Manager Laerdal Italia, Alessandro Satta, Representative of Società Futura Medica s.r.l. The ribbon cutting was preceded by the blessing of the building by Archbishop Gianfranco Saba.
