"Security governance at a crossroads"

On Monday 9 February, from 9.00 to 13.30, the University of Sassari will host, in the Aula Piras of the Department of Law in viale Mancini 5, the conference "Security governance at a crossroads. Actors, tools and emerging challenges for policy-making", the final event of the PRIN PNRR project "How to reduce crime and disorder? An impact evaluation of the Italian administrative orders (2012–2022)".

The initiative represents a moment of synthesis and discussion on the results of multi-year research which has seen the Department of Law of the University of Sassari play a central role, through the local unit of the project coordinated by Professor Marco Calaresu.

Among the main results already achieved by the research is the publication of the volume Security policies: models and tools for evaluation (Carocci, 2024), which collects theoretical and empirical contributions dedicated to the analysis of policy tools and methodologies for evaluating public safety policies, with particular attention to the urban context.

The conference is part of the research activities developed at our University in the field of urban security and policy analysis , contributing to the scientific debate on public intervention tools and their impacts.

After the institutional greetings, the morning will be dedicated to the presentation of the lines of research and the main results of the research, with interventions by researchers from the University of Sassari involved in the project, including Mirko Nazzari, Mauro Tebaldi and Chiara De Micheli, supported by scholars from Italian and international universities, including the University of Bologna, the University of Milan, the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli" and Edge Hill University.

The program also includes a round table with representatives of the institutions and operational actors of urban security, including Francesco Spanedda, Councilor for Local Authorities, Finance and Urban Planning of the Sardinia Region, Gianni Serra, Commander of the Local Police of Sassari, and Gian Guido Nobili, Head of the Urban Security, Legality and Local Police Area of ​​the Emilia-Romagna Region and representative of the Italian Forum for Urban Security (FISU). The event takes place under the patronage of FISU, confirming the growing inclusion of the city of Sassari and its University in the national networks for discussion on urban security policies.

The initiative is part of the research activities financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR - Next Generation EU), confirming the role of the University of Sassari and the Department of Law in the production of empirical and evaluative knowledge to support public policies and dialogue between the academic world and institutions.
