More than thirty years after the last Congress held in Sardinia, the XIV in 1990, the University of Cagliari, together with the University of Sassari, in collaboration with the Institute of Mediterranean European History of the National Research Council, is organizing the XXI Congress of the History of the Crown of Aragon in Cagliari, Sassari, and Alghero, from October 4-8, 2024, dedicated to 'Monarchy and Kingdoms: Processes of Integration in the Crown of Aragon (13th-18th centuries)'.

The Congresses of the Crown of Aragon boast a long scientific tradition: since 1908, on a regular basis, Italian, Spanish, and French historians have gathered to discuss the most innovative research results on the history, society, culture, and art of the territories that were part of the Crown of Aragon: the Kingdoms of Aragon, Valencia, Majorca, Sardinia, Sicily, and Naples, as well as the Principality of Catalonia, in addition to the territories of southern France.

This represents a geographically, politically, and culturally vast area, one that has profoundly shaped the history and identity of Mediterranean Europe, and consequently, Sardinia as well.

As outlined in the attached Program, the Congress will offer historiographical reflections on the intensity, complexity, and political, social, and cultural outcomes of the integration between Monarchy and Kingdoms. The proposal from the Sardinian institutions also aims to commemorate and promote the 700th anniversary of the Catalan-Aragonese rule over Sardinia. The sessions will focus on Political History, Economic History, History of Law and Institutions, History of Literature and Language, History of Art and Architecture, as well as Paleography and Diplomatics.
