Giants of Memory: meeting on the Great Trees Casa Dessì - via Roma 65 (Villacidro) 21 March 2026 6pm On Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March the University Botanical Garden promotes the "Giants of Memory: meeting on Great Trees" initiative, dedicated to the natural, historical and symbolic value of large trees. The event intends to enhance the environmental and cultural heritage represented by these custodians of the memory of the territories, often also evoked in the works of Giuseppe Dessì. The initiative is carried out with the participation of the Su Carinniu – Social Rural Tourism association of Villacidro The program is divided into two days. On Saturday 21 March, from 6pm to 8pm at Casa Dessì, the presentation of the book "Large trees and old-growth forests of Sardinia. Biodiversity, places, landscape, history" by the late Ignazio Camarda is scheduled, also an opportunity to remember the great Sardinian botanist, who passed away in 2025. A scholar of the flora and plant biodiversity of Sardinia and the Mediterranean, Camarda was full professor of systematic botany in the Department of Agriculture of the University of Sassari and scientific representative of the University Botanical Garden. During his scientific activity he contributed significantly to the study and valorization of the island's botanical heritage and was the founder and first president of Issla, the Sardinian Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts. The meeting is free, open to all. On Sunday 22 March, from 10am to 2pm, in Leni, an event dedicated to the care and protection of monumental olive trees will be held. Through explanations, field demonstrations and discussions with experts, it is necessary to book in order to participate, places are limited. The anniversary also coincides with three important international days: World Poetry Day promoted by UNESCO and International Forest Day, both on 21 March, and World Water Day, on 22 March.
