Recent media coverage regarding the spread of West Nile Virus and mosquito management in Sardinia highlights the vital role of scientific research in safeguarding public health and the environment.

Prof. Luca Ruiu, researcher at the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Sassari, addressed these key issues today in an interview published by the newspaper La Nuova Sardegna.

Climate Change and Shifting Ecosystem Dynamics

Ongoing climate change is significantly altering ecosystem balances across the Mediterranean region. Irregular precipitation patterns leading to stagnant water, combined with rising temperatures, create ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes and extend their reproductive season. This scenario is further complexified by bird migration routes, which play a key role in the West Nile Virus transmission cycle. In this evolving landscape, continuous monitoring and vector management are crucial priorities.

UniSS Research: Genetics, Resistance, and Biological Control

To tackle these challenges, the research group led by Prof. Ruiu conducted a three-year strategic study in close collaboration with the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Sardinia (IZS Sardegna), funded by the Regional Health Authority of the Autonomous Region of Sardinia.

Key achievements of the project include:

• Genetic mapping and characterization of mosquito populations across the island.
• Assessing insecticide resistance levels resulting from repeated chemical treatments over time.

In parallel, the research team focused on developing viable alternatives to chemical pesticides. This eco-friendly approach leverages biological control agents, naturally occurring microorganisms that target mosquitoes while remaining entirely safe for humans and non-target organisms.
