The University of Sassari welcomed the first 9 Palestinian students

The Rector of the University of Sassari, Gavino Mariotti, welcomed 9 of the 17 Palestinian students expected in the city. The first group, made up of 4 girls and 5 boys, landed at Alghero airport on Tuesday 12 May: the councilor of the Sardinia Region Antonio Piu, delegated by President Alessandra Todde, and the President of ERSU Sassari Daniele Maoddi were also present to embrace them.

The presentation press conference took place this morning in the Aula Magna. The Rector Gavino Mariotti underlined that for the University of Sassari the most important aspect of the entire operation, which required long months of work, is being able to guarantee the right to study to those who no longer have it. Also speaking were the President of ERSU Maoddi, the Archbishop of Sassari Francesco Soddu, the head of the university's Student Orientation and Services Office, Vanna Meloni, the representative of the regional coordination of "Students Beyond Borders-Progetto Fiori dai Cannoni", Federica Calbini, who made a great contribution to the success of the initiative.

Five of them will attend the University's degree courses thanks to grants of 12 thousand euros each, financed by the University of Sassari with the decisive contribution of ERSU which will offer meals and accommodation; they will study Public Communication and Information Professions, Linguistic and Cultural Mediation, Wildlife Management, Conservation and Control, Political Sciences.

Two other grants of 12 thousand euros are offered by the Sardinia Region and will allow a girl and a boy from this first contingent to study political science and computer engineering. The last two scholarships of this first group, intended for two students of Computer Engineering and Social Service, will be financed by ERSU, the Regional Body for the Right to Education of Sassari which will also provide room and board in the student's homes for the entire group. The work carried out by the University's Student Orientation and Service Office is fundamental.

Overall, also considering the group of 8 girls and the Palestinian boys who have not yet arrived, there will be 10 scholarships from the University of Sassari, 5 from the Region of Sardinia, 2 from ERSU (already mentioned), all three-year, of 12 thousand euros each.

 

The Humanitarian Corridors Initiative

The University of Sassari has joined a project that not only provides for the provision of financial contributions, but also a structured path of accompaniment and support for the students involved.

The initiative is coordinated by the CRUI and is part of the activities followed by the ministerial delegate in charge of managing the Humanitarian corridors .

In summary, the program includes: scholarships worth 12 thousand euros each; exemption from paying university fees; supply of textbooks; linguistic support and language courses organized by the University Language Centre; hospitality and free meals at the facilities made available by ERSU.
