The open semester was inaugurated

Classes for the "open semester"—designed for aspiring doctors, dentists, and veterinarians—began this morning in the brand-new classrooms at the University of Sassari’s Piandanna 2 complex.

For the second consecutive year, the open semester replaces the traditional entrance exam as the selection method for identifying the best-prepared and most motivated prospective students. As Rector Gavino Mariotti emphasized during his welcome address, the medical profession can make a real difference in people's lives, but it is a path that requires immense motivation.

Also present at the welcome event were Pier Paolo Terragni, President of the Faculty of Medicine’s Coordinating Body; Antonio Cossu, President of the Medicine and Surgery Degree Program; and professors Luigi Bagella and Margherita Maioli, who will be teaching courses during the semester.

Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and introductory Biochemistry are the core subjects of the open semester; they will play a crucial role in preparing students for the selection tests scheduled nationwide for December 10, 2026, and January 11, 2027. The University of Sassari aims to support the 800 aspiring students leading up to this critical moment, relying not only on faculty members but also on specially appointed tutors. "It is a challenging path that shouldn't be underestimated from day one; it is a team effort we will undertake together," students were told as they packed two large lecture halls at the Piandanna 2 complex on the first day of class (though the program can also be followed remotely).

Not everyone will succeed. For Medicine, there are 241 places available against 561 applications; for Dentistry, 49 applications for 26 places; and for Veterinary Medicine, 190 applications for 56 places.
