Scientists, policymakers, and wine industry representatives gathered at the European Parliament in Brussels on Tuesday to debate how wine should be viewed within public health policies, at a time when European institutions are intensifying efforts to combat cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and other non-communicable diseases. The event, titled "Health Debates: Can Wine Be Part of a Healthy Lifestyle?", was hosted by Italian MEP Dario Nardella (Socialists and Democrats group) and organized by the Comité Européen des Entreprises Vins (CEEV), the main trade association for European wine companies. According to the organizers, the discussion focused on the need for policymaking to take into account consumption habits, diet, social customs, and broader lifestyle factors, rather than treating all forms of alcohol consumption in the same way. The scientific panel included Gianni Pes, a professor at the University of Sassari, who has studied "Blue Zones" to understand how diet and lifestyle can increase life expectancy.
